CRASH TEST

CRASH TEST is a duo exhibition by Oliviero Fiorenzi and Yoan Mudry, presented at Sonnenstube Offspace in Lugano. This site-specific intervention transforms the former Morel garage into an immersive performance, where sound, architecture, and artworks merge into an experience that breaks traditional exhibition formats, creating a multisensory journey through space.

CRASH TEST is an exhibition presented by Sonnenstube during its residency at Morel, by Oliviero Fiorenzi and Yoan Mudry. It is the outcome of a project deeply rooted in its context - a fully site-specific intervention.

CRASH TEST disorients its visitors who, despite their familiarity with the space's program, are confronted for the first time with unexpected sounds, unfamiliar noises, creaks, and whistles never before heard in this venue.

The Morel building, a former garage abandoned since the 1980s, becomes the stage for the artists’ performance. The space is filled with authentic sounds - engine roars. Breaking away from the conventional exhibition stereotype - whether on the ground floor behind the large window or up on the fourth floor - the artists invite visitors to engage in a performance that inhabits the entire building, drawing upon its most defining feature: it was built for machines, not people.

Ramps too steep for walking, hangars too vast to be heated, and now-empty parking spaces are reinterpreted as part of an architectural safari. The integration of various elements in constructing the exhibition made it necessary to divide the experience into distinct phases; for this reason, the format of an opera libretto was chosen to convey the complexity of the show.
