MOVIN SIGN

In Moving Sign, Oliviero Fiorenzi transforms a small boat with a painted sail into a mobile maritime signal, exploring themes of visibility, curiosity, and mutual gaze. The optical design of the sail, inspired by the “Dazzle Camouflage” used on warships during World War I, attracts and confuses the viewer. Navigating daily along the coast of Marzocca, the artist becomes both observer and observed, blending into the landscape. The process, documented through photographs and paintings, was created for the MarzoccaReLab residency and presented at the 12th edition of Demanio Marittimo KM-278.

With Moving Sign, created for the Marzocca Re-Lab residency, Oliviero Fiorenzi continues his research begun with the Segnali project (2020), exploring the sea as an unprecedented exhibition space. This time, a small boat with a painted sail replaces the buoy as the central object of artistic investigation. The sail, decorated with an optical design inspired by the “Dazzle Camouflage” used on warships during World War I, captures the gaze not to hide but to attract and confuse the observer.

The artist sails daily along the Marzocca coastline, creating a visual routine that transforms his constant sailing into a moving element in the landscape. This dynamic dialogue with the sea and with those observing from the shore turns Fiorenzi himself into a signal, becoming both the object of observation and the observer. During the days spent navigating, he gathers impressions and sensations, later expressed through photographic and painterly narratives.

Marzocca thus becomes an artistic playground, a place where gazes and perspectives intertwine. The photographic and video documentation of this performative practice was presented at the 12th edition of Demanio Marittimo KM-278.

Fiorenzi reaffirms art’s potential as a tool for visual and personal dialogue, placing mutual gaze and the construction of meaning through interaction with the landscape and its inhabitants at the center.
