OGNUNO È BANDIERA

Ognuno è Bandiera (2024) is a workshop and site-specific installation by artist Oliviero Fiorenzi, created for Dynamo Camp in collaboration with Majotech. The suspended structure holds twenty multicolored flags made by Dynamo Camp families. Traditionally a symbol of national belonging, the flag is reinterpreted as a collage of shapes and colors preserving the participants’ most cherished childhood memories, creating an individual mythology. The result is a kaleidoscope of personal stories, a celebration of uniqueness and the richness of diversity.

Ognuno è Bandiera (2024) is a site-specific project by Oliviero Fiorenzi, conceived as both a workshop and installation for Dynamo Camp, in collaboration with Majotech. The work consists of a suspended structure hosting twenty multicolored flags created by the families of Dynamo Camp, transforming the collective symbol of the flag into a representation of intimate memories and personal identities. The installation celebrates the multiplicity of human stories, overturning the concept of division to create a collective representation of diversity, as described by Marco Bazzini in the critical text accompanying the project:

“Each flag is born in the ‘nation’ present within each of us, made up of multiple selves and experiences. These are the ‘individual mythologies,’ as Fiorenzi calls them, which give rise to the various visual narratives. Each flag tells stories of courage and freedom that do not speak of homeland or war, but of personal memories distilled into striking visual compositions.”

Fiorenzi guided participants through a creative process based on collage, evoking the work of artists like Bruno Munari, Henri Matisse, and Alexander Calder. Geometric shapes, stars, moons, and everyday objects intertwine in unique compositions. Transformed into fabric, these flags flutter in the air, embodying the dynamism and vitality characteristic of the artist’s practice.

Otherness, often perceived as a divisive element, becomes a unifying force in Ognuno è Bandiera. It is in the multiplicity and uniqueness of the flags that the true representation of each individual is found. The project goes beyond representing individual stories, positioning itself as a relational tool, as Bazzini further emphasizes:

“It is not an invitation to retreat or defend one’s identity, but a practice that transcends individual barriers to build dialogue. Here, the flags become open objects, symbols of encounter, where the true goal is not only to shape the artwork but life itself.”
